  • We'll be using the 1979 World of Dungeons system (not to be confused with the modern mobile game of the same name.) I've got some homebrew rules and so on thrown in (see Bards.) It's basically D&D stripped down to its bare basics. The entire rulebook is only six pages long. Two of those pages are blank character sheets and one is half leveling table, half illustration.

    Every character starts off with a Skill of their choice and a Skill based on their Class. (Except for Clerics, who get one more Class Skill - because they're holier than thou.) You also get to pick 2 Special Abilities based on your Class. (Except for Wizards who automatically get Summon, so they only get to pick one more Special Ability.)

    Ok, I'm a big ol' dummy who likes to make things more complicated than they need to be. You might see that I deleted all the attribute templates. That's because I completely overlooked the totally obvious fact that the file names each have well more that six numbers in them. There's no need to make six separate pictures to get six different numbers.

    Anyway, starting over AGAIN.

    Scribbles doesn't have a dice roller, and I highly doubt we'll be able to find a time where we're all online at once to use something like Roll Dice With Friends. So, we'll be using the numbers in the file names that Scribbles assigns to each picture.

    World of Dungeons is a D6 system, however the numbers Scribbles generates are base 10, not base 6. So we're just gonna change the D6 into a D5. For the sake of simplicity, we're gonna treat 2 D6 for rolling attributes and making an action as a D10 instead of 2 D5. Scribbles file names are alphanumeric. So we'll be looking for the last number in the file name and just ignoring any letters. For D10 rolls 0=10 (a critical success,) 1=1 (a critical fail.) When it comes to calculating damage, we'll then be using multiple D5s. For D5 rolls, we'll convert numbers above 5 like so: 6 becomes 1, 7 becomes 2, 8 becomes 3, 9 becomes 4, and 0 becomes 5. If we're rolling multiple D5s or D10's at once, we'll just use the second-to-last number, third-to-last, and so on.

    So to calculate our Attributes' bonuses, we'll need to roll 6 D10s. Take the last 6 numbers from the file name of your character drawing, then convert the numbers like so:
    1 - 4 = +0
    5 - 7 = +1
    8 - 9 = +2
    10 = +3

    Now determine which of those bonuses you want to give to which Attribute. I'll be posting a character sheet template for you soon. Don't think I'll get to finishing it tonight, though. Wasted too much time with that overly drawn out scheme from earlier.

    Sorry about that.

  • Magic (Special rules for Wizards)

    Most magic requires summoning a spirit, demon, or elemental to perform supernatural effects.

    A Wizard begins play with the occult knowledge to summon two spirits. A spirit has a name, an appearance, and two domains of power (flame, shadow, stone, lightning, secrets, fear, etc.).

    To summon a spirit you know, you require one of the following:
    • 1 hour of uninterrupted ritual.
    • A dose of quicksilver—a mild poison and addictive drug. (10s per use). If you drink more quicksilver doses in a day than your Level you must attempt to resist its negative effects with a CON roll.
    • A magic item containing a bound spirit.

    A Wizard may command a spirit to perform a single magical effect that falls within its domains (it’s a good idea to give specific commands; spirits and demons can be capricious and cruel).

    Magical attacks do 2 D5+level or 3 D5+level damage if they are especially suited to the situation (using fire against a Frost Wraith, for example).

    Here's the character sheet template. It's a little sloppy, but that's the Remixer for ya.

    Attributes should be familiar to anyone who's played D&D before. Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. Everything you do in this game can be boiled down to one of these stats. I won't be making you roll for everything you do. Just when you try to do something I think should be challenging.

    Skills are things you've learned. Again, this is a lot like D&D, but the World of Dungeons system has a much shorter list. Also, none of these require training to use, you just won't be as good at them. WoD doesn't have the skills connected to the attributes, that part I copied from D&D. (I'm adding in several rules from D&D just to flesh it out better. Did I mention the World of Dungeons rules only take up two and a half pages?)

    Anyway, if you're trained in a skill, World of Dungeons says you cannot fail, low rolls are all supposed to be partial successes. But I'm gonna say that a critical fail is still a fail, even if you're trained. Everybody fucks up at their job sometimes.

    HP stands for Hit Points, those are calculated using your Hit Dice. Hit Dice are D5s. The number of dice you get is 1 plus your CON. You roll your hit dice and you get to keep as many dice as your level for your HP. That means if you have a level 1 character with a CON of +2, you then have 3 Hit Dice. When you roll those dice, at level 1 you get to chose just 1 of those results for your HP. I suggest the highest one.

    But no rolling this time. I'm gonna be nice and just start everybody off with max HP. So 5 - unless you're a fighter with Hardy. That one goes up to 11.

    AC stands for Armor Class, which is just the total value of your armor and shield. Don't worry about this just yet, along with weapons and inventory. We're gonna go shopping in-game. Speaking of shopping, everybody starts off with #60 C…

  • If all this is making your head spin, don't worry. Once we get the characters made, all you'll have to do is tell me what you want them to do, and I can look at the file name and tell you if they succeeded or not.

  • @refractor: Hmm, that seems like a low roll for your attributes. I might let you re-roll that, depending on how the others turn out.

    2
  • World of Dungeons is a published game that's been thoroughly playtested. The changes I made for Scribbles have not. They are subject to change should they prove too broken to be fun.

    2
  • Using the file names for dice rolls would work really well for a D10 dice pool system like in World of Darkness. (No relation to World of Dungeons.) But WoD is far more complicated than WoD. While World of Dungeons fits on a pamphlet, World of Darkness takes up multiple bookshelves. While I did find a rules light Darkness clone, we're gonna stick with Dungeons for this game. I'm personally more experienced with World of Darkness than D&D, but I figure more of you know D&D better than WoD. So this is probably the easiest place to start for everyone.

    I plan to take the lessons learned from this game and use them to cobble together a new dice pool driven engine just for Scribbles.

  • While we wait for the others to stagger in, let's get started with a little shopping. I said we'd do this in-game, but not the main game. This will be more of a pre-game. A tutorial stage, if you will.

    You find yourself in a rather large building. Shelves as far as the eye can see, stocked with a wide variety of goods. A small, winged man, sporting an ill-fitting red vest and a name tag that reads "Vinnie," greats you.

    "Welcomes ta FAEmart, what can I help yas find taday?"

  • Hi there Vinnie, great to meet you, how are you today?

    "I'm about to do some travelling, but I don't really know where to start. Besides when I was studying the faith, I've always been close to home. Do you have any advice on what I should be buying? Warm clothes? Matches? I hear people talking about long-life milk - where they treat it with extreme heat so it doesn't go bad - is that important?"
    He sighed with resignation.
    "I never expected to be doing this Vinnie. My whole life was geared towards leading a congregation, being at the heart of a community, helping people - but the congregation just didn't take to my ideas, they called me a beta-cuck and a simp - I don't know what those words mean Vinnie. Someone said I should wear a hat - is that why people wear hats Vinnie, for travelling?"

    Trying to work in some character building, hope it isn't too depressing - he JUST got kicked out of his church and needed someone to vent to. Also, while I styled him as a modern vicar, he can be a member of whatever in-world religion is appropriate, the main thing is that he's a naive, well-meaning guy from a flawed religion.

    Wouldn't say no to a reroll, my character sheet would give me:

    Bagleton (Bags) de Sac comes from the land of Minaudière. Few people visit the Minaudi and even fewer trust them. Due to their size and some complex cultural ideologies, most Minaudi abroad take up a life of petty thievery, caring little for the prejudices they experience daily as a result (in the sense that they don't even notice it or recognize the problematic nature thereof).

    Bagleton has been hired by /someone/ to steal /something/ from /somewhere/ that conveniently lines up with/doesn't directly interfere with the goals of the party at large, because what fun is there in being able to fully trust the motivations of your entire party?

    Should the party ever visit Minaudiere, they would be wise to keep their purses close and their Bags even closer. Also all the doors are tiny.

  • Hold off on filling out character sheets for right now. I think I see the problem with my attribute roll system. I need to do a little math to find the best solution, but my lunch break is almost over. I'll post the amended rules tonight.

  • Rule Amendment

    Rolling for Attribute Bonuses

    Using 1 D10 instead of 2 D5 was a mistake. I did it to keep things simple, but there was a good reason World of Dungeons uses 2 dice instead of 1 - at least when it comes to rolling stats.

    Here's the thing when it comes to dice and probability: When you roll just one die, the odds of getting any given number on that die are even. When you roll 2 or more dice, the odds favor the middle numbers instead. I knew this going in, but I was in a hurry to get the rules posted so we can get started. I didn't think it through.

    So we're gonna use 2 D5 for attributes instead. Rolling 2 dice is just adding 2 numbers together. Instead of using the last 6 numbers in the file name, use the last 12.

    Remember, for D5, numbers above 5 are converted like so:
    6=1
    7=2
    8=3
    9=4
    0=5

    And the conversion chart for Attribute Bonuses will remain the same.
    1 - 4 = +0
    5 - 7 = +1
    8 - 9 = +2
    10 = +3

    With this change, you will be more likely to have +1s and some +2s. +0 and especially +3 become more rare. But it's still possible to get low rolls. Dice gonna dice. If you are unsatisfied with your roll, I will allow you to use the first 12 numbers in the file name instead. But this is just for character creation. In the main game, re-rolls will be rare.

    1 1
  • nothing, at the moment.

    Holy water has a cost in this game. You can find it at FAEmart.

    2
  • I did anticipate you two wanting both of these items. But everybody starts out with nothing but a fist full of coin. Everything that serves a useful purpose in this game will have a cost.

    World of Dungeons does have an official equipment list, it's designed for making up your own stuff. Still, I'm not gonna just hand over that list, not right now. You have to talk to Vinnie. That way your imaginations can run wild and the special items will become a collaborative effort, more in keeping with the spirit of Scribbles.

    Unfortunately, I have a guest over right now which leaves me little time to draw. Vinnie will most likely be able to continue helping yous mugs tomorrow evening.

    2
    1
  • If you don't have enough money to buy everything you want - and you won't - don't worry. There will be plenty of opportunities to earn more coin in the main game, as well as shops and markets to visit. But FAEmart is the most fully stocked shop you've ever seen. Think hard about what you want to start with. Other places might not keep it in their inventory.

    We could use a dice roller like that, but my big concern is accountability. With us all being online at different times, it's hard to have witnesses of the rolls. And most of us know our way around Photoshop well enough to fake images if we want to. Using the numbers in our image titles keeps us all honest.
